    Today, almost everybody owns a portable electronic device.  Becoming part of an organization that designs and develops advanced mobile electronics is something to be excited about.  Within the Mechanical Engineering organization you will be afforded the opportunity to work on the packaging and mechanism of these devices.  Our department designs housings, keyboards, covers, brackets, batteries, produced with cutting edge manufacturing processes using high end engineering plastic and metal materials. The seasoned engineers within the group possess great knowledge in a variety of areas including keyboards, batteries, displays, scanners, and latest technology of injection molding, die casting, duel shot overmolding, LSR, etc. The products we are developing are extremely rugged and have to meet the toughest environment requirements, such as drop, IP, tumble, shock & vibration, corrosion, abrasion, etc. You too can increase your knowledge in these areas and more by becoming part of this thrilling organization.

    Responsibilities

    You will be joining the Mechanical Engineering team and will be participating in leading edge design activities for state-of-the-art rugged mobile computers (including wearable computers). Your responsibilities will include the activities below, in a varying mix depending on the program and on the level of Mechanical Engineering (ME) staffing for that program:

    • Participate in the Mechanical Engineering activities aimed at developing mobile computers and associated accessories (the “product family”).
    • Contribute to design of mechanical structure, sub assemblies and parts. Carry out elementary design tasks of 3D modeling and 2D drafting using Pro/Engineer throughout new product development or current product sustaining stages.
    • Work with the Mechanical Engineers to assist in coordinating the activities of the designers to achieve a compliant design for the product family in the shortest possible time and at the lowest possible cost.
    • Assist in guiding the overall mechanical design for the product family to ensure that it fulfills the Product Requirements Specification. Assist in guiding and managing the detailed integration of the various modules and sub-assemblies in the mobile computers (e.g. display modules, imagers, radios, batteries, etc.), the design of the accessories, and help ensure the correct integration of the computer and associated accessories.
    • Perform variable mechanical testing at test lab, including but not limited to: drop, IP, S&V, abrasion, tumble, environmental, etc.
    • Participate in product issue trouble shooting, technical reviews, family tree and BOM build up, PLM document release.
    • Evaluate devices already on the market
    • Drive cutting-edge innovation into new products
    • Work in close collaboration with the other disciplines to ensure that their requirements coexist with the mechanical requirements
    • Work to ensure that mechanical product family verification is planned early in the program and that it is conducted in an efficient and structured manner.
    • Actively participate in the Program Management Team meetings from a mechanical engineering perspective.
    • Support the transfer of responsibility for the new product from the design team to the Manufacturing group and the Sustaining Engineering group (ECRT). This will require a close collaboration with the New Product Introduction (NPI) group during development and product launch.
    • Participate in executing the NPI builds.
    • Support and assist with mechanical product issues identified through the Sustaining Engineering Group (ECRT)
    • Take ownership and full responsibility of all tasks assigned, keep track of progress and status against project / management goals and schedule.

    Qualifications

    Specific Knowledge/Skills

    • Must be excited about 21st Century technologies (otherwise, why bother working in high-tech?).
    • Solid understanding of engineering principles, specifically in the areas of Mechanical Engineering
    • Basic knowledge in plastic, metalwork and elastomer part designs an asset.
    • Basic knowledge in tooling and process of plastic injection, die casting, sheet metal stamping and elastomer compression, as well as painting/ plating processes an asset.
    • Experience in Pro/Engineer CAD software an asset
    • Basic knowledge in engineering analysis (FMEA, stress, tolerance stack-up, etc)
    • Familiar with electronics packaging hardware an asset.
    • Basic knowledge in design for manufacturing, assembling, testing and service.
    • Experience in evaluation tests (IP, drop, shock and vibe, abrasion and corrosion resistance, EMI/EMC, etc) an asset.
    • Creativity in solving problems.
    • Strong interest in (and, if possible, experience in using) mobile computing devices (e.g. smartphones, wearable devices, tablets, mobile Operating Systems such as Windows, Android, iOS).
    • Experience with MS Office is required.
    • Ability to quickly learn to use new and complex software tools.
    • Must be a clear thinker with a focus on delivering cool solutions.
    • Must be well organized with good time management skills.
    • Must work equally well independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
    • Must be able to work on multiple tasks and/or projects at any given time.
    • Good verbal and written skills are essential.
